Early Life and Education

Tell us something about you, your early life, and your education.

I was born in and grew up in Bengaluru… went to Kendriya Vidyalaya, Malleswaram, MES College, and UVCE. 

Later on, I went to the USA to do a Master’s in computer engineering at the University of Alabama... got a scholarship, a teaching assistantship, and a summer job there.  

From Alabama, I moved to Northern Virginia… got a software engineering job with NUS Corporation and Telenet. 

After a couple of years of working with these companies, I went out as an independent contractor/consultant… this was the genesis of my business, IonIdea. (it was called IBC at that time). 

Influential Thoughts and Philosophies

What thoughts and philosophies have shaped you as a person?

Being born in India, eastern philosophies and thoughts have had a significant impact. 

We must do the very best we can in everything we do without worrying about the results.Strategizing, planning, and executing with passion and diligence are very important… however, worrying about outcomes or hankering after returns are not productive.

What we put out in spoonsful the Universe returns to us in spades.  We reap what we sow… Karma is real.  Therefore, it’s very important to watch our thoughts, habits, and actions.

We must always pay it forward.  Each of us is what we are today because of the generosity of people that we know and do not even know. We must therefore repay by being generous to others that we know and do not know.

Last but not least… we must live joyously every moment of our lives by passionately engaging in everything we do… be it work, play, or family time.

Tell us about your business and its presence in target markets.

We have offices and customers in the US, Europe, the Middle East, India, and Singapore. 

IonIdea specializes in delivering “Product Engineering” solutions for Tech companies, and “Digital Transformation” solutions for mid to large-size enterprises in the Tech, Telecom, Financial Services, Education, and other sectors.  

In addition to building bespoke custom software for business-critical applications, we also implement 3rd party technology products from companies such as Microsoft, IBM, Dynatrace, AWS, Azure, Google, Guidewire, etc.

Our sister company, Talent Tigers, specializes in delivering BPO solutions in recruitment, revenue cycle management, data management, data annotation, etc.

In addition to providing technology and BPO services, and implementing 3rd party products, do you also have your own products?

Yes, we do!   In the education sector, we have ion-Education, an Academic ERP suite.  Over 200 colleges and universities in India and surrounding countries use our software, and adoption is growing fast this year.   Cudos, an outcome-based curriculum design and learning attainment tracking solution is the anchor in this suite.   In addition to Cudos, we have modules for learning management, digital valuation, examination management, fee management, admissions management, etc.  
We also have GuardOn, an Enterprise Emergency Response Management solution.  It includes a versatile and easy-to-use product comprising of mobile apps, cloud software, voice assistants, and wearable devices.  GuardOn also has a 24x7x365 emergency response monitoring service that sends help quickly in response to medical and safety alerts. 

GuardOn helps Enterprises keep their employees safe while they are working, immaterial of where they are working.   Enterprises execute their duty of care towards their employees with GuardOn.

Tell us about the company’s focus and investment in research and innovation.

As part of our own business transformation, we are also investing significantly in innovating new solutions and products. To do this, we have a research group called ionLabs.  Its main function is to continuously look for problems, gaps, and opportunities in the industries we serve. It addresses these with technologies that we build with the help of teacher customers from these industries so that the products/solutions have a good product-market fit.

Leveraging Artificial Intelligence

AI is the rage today… what are you doing in Artificial Intelligence?

AI has become an extremely important tool in our toolbox.  We have implemented AI within our own organization in many ways… using off-the-shelf AI products wherever appropriate in sales, marketing, HR, recruiting, etc., but also building our own custom solutions using open-source data lakes, multimode LLMs, NLP, etc. in many business-critical areas, especially when operating on our proprietary data.

Over the last several years, we have built dozens of bespoke AI solutions for our customers… to build out intelligence in their technology products, and to supercharge their business processes.  Numerous applications for custom AI solutions… including but not limited to search, document management, information retrieval, mortgage data processing, responses to RFPs, increasing sales closure rates, reducing customer churn, increasing customer intimacy, customized teaching/learning, evaluation of answer scripts, etc.

In many ways!   We solve our customers’ problems, we create new opportunities for them, and we give them magic superpowers!  

Most importantly, working with us, they get peace of mind because they know we have their backs, that we will do everything we can, and will leave no stone unturned until their goals are met.

We help our customers improve their business productivity, reduce costs, bring products to market quickly, build better products/solutions, and be agile and responsive to market changes.

Our customers get quick access to very good global talent, they can scale up/down quickly and easily.

What are the core beliefs and values of your company?  How have they helped?

Right from the inception of our company, we have stressed the importance of Trust360… in building trusted relationships with all our stakeholders… our customers, employees, and community.  

We train our employees on how to build trusted relationships through excellence in our work, integrity in all our actions/interactions, empathy for the other person we are interacting with, and clarity in communications.

Internally, each team dedicates 10% to 20% of their time every week towards excellence… to find ways for continuous improvement… improvement processes, use of new tools/technologies, development of reusable components, and training/learning. 

This focus on Trust and Excellence has paid off for us in the form of having long-term customers… many of our customers have engaged with us for 20, 25, and even 30 years continuously.

What are your growth and expansion plans?

We are in the process of transforming our 30-year old, 1,000+ employee, "personally owned” innovative multi-country technology solutions firm, to a much larger, super innovative, hyper-competitive, truly global, "Partner Owned" firm.   Over the next 5 to 10 years, Partners will own a majority of IonIdea.

We are onboarding senior C-Level, SVP/VP level executives as Partners in our firm.  In the first quarter of 2024, we have onboarded over 28 Partners into IonIdea.   Our Partners are CEOs of portions of our company… they have rainmaking responsibility and P&L authority, and they get to build equity in their Partnership, and own equity in IonIdea.  Being a Partner is an entrepreneurial opportunity with unlimited upside… however, our Partners do not have to invest any money into our business.

What would you say to prospective employees who want to join your company?

We welcome everybody to work with us… we are an equal-opportunity employer!  Passion, excellence, intelligence, integrity, empathy, commitment, capability, and talent are what we value in our employees, and are the basis of selection and promotion in our company.  We fully recognize that these traits are not limited to any gender, age, nationality, race, religion, etc.

Advice for Startups

Any tips for startups looking to get onto a similar pathway? 

Know your target market.  Clearly understand the problem, challenge, and opportunity that you are trying to address.  Build a solution (product, service) that addresses it.  Validate your solution with actual users/customers to ensure product-market fit.  Focus on delivering excellent value… deliver it with integrity and empathy.   Most importantly, do the very best you can… give it all you got… and do not worry about the results.

How can you help these startup entrepreneurs? 

In an advisory role, I am happy to be a sounding-board for them.  They can bounce off their thoughts, ideas off me, and I can help them develop.   Also, if they have unique products that bring value to our customers, we can propose them to our client base.  We can also think of more strategic tie-ups.  My very best wishes are always with all entrepreneurs… may their dreams of changing the world come true!
