Trump Delays 50% Tariffs on EU Until July 9 After Talks with Von der Leyen

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he will postpone the imposition of a 50% tariff on European Union goods until July 9, following a request from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“I agreed to the extension — July 9, 2025 — It was my privilege to do so,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, confirming the move after what both leaders described as a “good call.”

Von der Leyen had asked for more time to “reach a good deal,” emphasizing the strength of the EU-U.S. trade relationship and the EU’s readiness to advance negotiations.

The tariff, part of Trump’s broader push for “reciprocal trade measures,” was originally scheduled to take effect June 1. Trump had already reduced an earlier 20% tariff to 10% in April, only to propose a straight 50% hike last week, citing stalled negotiations.

“Our discussions with them are going nowhere,” Trump said Friday. “It’s time that we play the game the way I know how.”

The temporary delay opens a narrow window for renewed transatlantic talks as both sides seek to avoid a full-blown trade escalation.
