New Delhi: Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman met former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Delhi on Tuesday to explore new opportunities for strengthening financial ties and fostering economic growth between the two nations.

During the meeting, Sitharaman underscored the importance of utilizing the Commonwealth to bring shared interests to the G7 agenda, particularly to benefit the Global South. Her remarks align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier statements at the G7 summit in Italy’s Apulia region, where he highlighted India's dedication to advocating for the concerns of developing nations.

Strengthening Global Economic Cooperation

PM Modi had previously emphasized that countries in the Global South bear the brunt of global uncertainties and geopolitical tensions. He played a key role in securing the African Union’s permanent membership in the G20 under India’s leadership, ensuring a stronger voice for developing nations in international decision-making forums.

At the meeting, Sitharaman and Sunak explored ways to enhance market-driven financial cooperation and strategic partnerships, paving the way for closer economic collaboration between India and the UK.

AI and Sustainable Development

PM Modi has also urged an end to technological monopolies by advanced nations, advocating for transparent and responsible governance in artificial intelligence (AI). India, one of the first countries to launch a national AI strategy and the 'AI for All' mission, has positioned itself as a leader in AI innovation.

Additionally, India continues to champion sustainable development. Modi’s energy strategy, focused on availability, accessibility, affordability, and acceptability, underscores the country’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070 and promoting global sustainability efforts.

Recent Diplomatic Engagements

Sitharaman’s meeting with Sunak follows a similar engagement between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and the former UK Prime Minister on Monday. Jaishankar shared insights from their discussion on social media, expressing appreciation for Sunak’s ongoing support in strengthening India-UK relations.

The series of meetings signals continued diplomatic engagement between India and the UK, reinforcing their commitment to deepening economic and strategic ties for mutual growth and development.
