67 Indians Rescued from Cyber-Scam Trafficking Racket in Laos
In a significant rescue operation, the Indian Embassy in Laos successfully freed 67 Indians who were trafficked into cyber-scam centers in the Bokeo province. These victims, subjected to abuse and criminal intimidation, were trapped in a sprawling trafficking network operating out of the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (GTSEZ).
Prompt Action by the Indian Embassy
The operation began when the embassy received a distress call from the victims. Acting swiftly, a team of officials traveled to GTSEZ and collaborated closely with Lao authorities to secure the victims’ release.
"A team of Embassy officials worked diligently with Lao authorities to complete the necessary procedures and paperwork to enable the victims to leave GTSEZ and reach the Embassy in Vientiane," the Indian Embassy stated. They also facilitated transportation, accommodation, and food for the victims.
Indian Ambassador to Laos, Prashant Agrawal, met with the rescued individuals to discuss the challenges they endured. Ambassador Agrawal assured them of full support and prioritized their safe return to India.
Current Status and Future Actions
The embassy is now working with local authorities in Vientiane to finalize the victims' exit formalities. Once completed, the rescued Indians will be able to return home.
"We thank the Lao authorities for their cooperation and have raised the matter at the highest levels, urging action against those responsible," the embassy said.
Warning Against Trafficking Scams
The Indian Embassy issued a caution to Indian citizens regarding fraudulent job offers in Thailand that lead to trafficking. These scams often direct victims to travel by road to Chiang Rai near the Thai-Lao border. Upon arrival in GTSEZ, victims may have their passports confiscated by criminal syndicates and be forced to sign exploitative contracts in foreign languages.
Ongoing Efforts
This rescue operation is part of a larger effort by the Indian Embassy in Laos, which has so far rescued 924 Indians from similar trafficking situations. Of these, 857 have already been safely repatriated to India.
The embassy continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of Indian citizens abroad and is taking stringent measures to address trafficking networks in collaboration with Lao authorities.
