Zelensky: Trump's "Unpredictability" Could Help End War with Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope that incoming US President Donald Trump's "unpredictability" might help bring an end to Ukraine's conflict with Russia. In an interview aired Thursday, Zelensky said he would like Trump’s strong and unpredictable approach to apply pressure on Russia, adding, "I believe he really wants to end the war."
Trump, set to take office on January 20, has claimed he can resolve the nearly three-year conflict within "24 hours," a statement that has raised concerns in Kyiv. Ukrainian officials worry such a resolution might involve conceding territory for peace, which they oppose.
Zelensky has been working to establish positive relations with Trump’s team amid fears the Republican leader could reduce or halt US military aid. He also voiced support for deploying international peacekeepers, such as French troops, to secure a future peace agreement with Russia. However, he stressed this must be part of Ukraine’s broader path to NATO membership, stating, "France alone is not enough. It should be a collective effort leading towards NATO."
French President Emmanuel Macron has previously suggested sending Western troops to Ukraine, a proposal Zelensky indicated could be part of broader international efforts.
Acknowledging the strain on Ukraine's military, Zelensky noted, "They are pressing, and the guys are tired," as Russian forces advanced by nearly 4,000 square kilometers last year. The war has taken a toll on Ukraine’s manpower, highlighting the urgency for international support and solutions.
