Trump Halts Mexico Tariffs for One Month Following Talks with Sheinbaum

The United States has agreed to suspend planned tariffs on Mexican imports for one month following discussions between President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The decision comes as part of ongoing negotiations aimed at addressing security and trade concerns between the two neighboring nations.

In an official statement, President Sheinbaum confirmed that Mexico will strengthen its northern border security by deploying 10,000 National Guard troops. The move is intended to curb drug trafficking, with a particular focus on halting the flow of fentanyl into the United States.

"We had a good conversation with President Trump, marked by mutual respect for our nations' relationship and sovereignty," Sheinbaum wrote on social media platform X. "Mexico will take immediate action to reinforce security along our border to prevent drug trafficking, while the United States has committed to curbing the illegal flow of high-powered weapons into Mexico."

Following their discussions, both leaders announced that teams from their respective governments would begin work on Monday to address security and trade-related matters.

Trump, who confirmed the tariff suspension in his own social media post, described the talks as "very friendly" and stated that negotiations would continue during the one-month pause.

The suspension follows Trump's announcement on Saturday of broad tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China, citing what he described as a "major threat" posed by illegal immigration and drug trafficking. In response, President Sheinbaum had previously signaled that Mexico was prepared to retaliate if necessary.

While the temporary reprieve provides both sides with an opportunity to negotiate a long-term resolution, economic analysts warn that the uncertainty surrounding trade policies could impact markets and businesses that rely on cross-border commerce.

The next steps in negotiations will be closely watched, as both governments work toward a resolution that addresses security concerns while maintaining strong economic ties.
