Tejas Delays Raise Concerns Amid China's Advancements in Fighter Jets

Table of Contents

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has raised concerns over delays in the delivery of the Tejas fighter jets. Air Chief Marshal AP Singh highlighted the issue at the Subroto Mukherjee Seminar, emphasizing the need for faster production and stronger private sector involvement in defense manufacturing.

The Tejas project began in 1984 to replace older jets like the MiG-21. Its first flight was in 2001, but production delays have persisted. Despite being inducted in 2016, the first batch of 40 aircraft is yet to be delivered. The Air Force chief stressed that R&D efforts lose relevance when timelines are not met. He called for increased private participation and competition to improve production efficiency.

China recently tested its sixth-generation stealth fighter jets, increasing pressure on India to modernize its fleet. The IAF currently operates only 31 squadrons, far below the sanctioned 42. Retiring old aircraft like the MiG-21 further reduces the fleet's strength.

India’s focus on self-reliance in defense is critical as neighboring countries rapidly modernize their military capabilities.
