Nepal Flood Disaster Leaves Hundreds Dead as Rescue Efforts Intensify
Nepal is facing one of its worst recent natural disasters after devastating flash floods and landslides swept through communities along the Nepal-China border. Nearly 800 people have died across Nepal and Tibet, while more than 3,000 remain missing, according to the latest reports.
The disaster began after a glacier collapse triggered a powerful surge of water, mud and debris through the Himalayan valleys. Homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure were swept away, leaving several communities cut off and thousands of families searching for missing relatives.
Rescue teams are now working around the clock, with particular attention on hydropower project tunnels, where hundreds of workers are believed to remain trapped. Nearly 21,000 Nepali security personnel have been involved in rescue and relief operations, while China and India have also provided technical assistance and support.
The difficult terrain and continuing risk of landslides and rising rivers are making the rescue effort extremely challenging. In some areas, thick layers of mud and debris have blocked access to those who may still be trapped.
For families across the affected region, the search has become a painful race against time. Many are still waiting for news about loved ones, while authorities are working to identify recovered bodies and reunite them with their families.
The disaster has also affected neighbouring Tibet, where 16 deaths and hundreds of missing people have been reported. The scale of the destruction has raised renewed concerns about the vulnerability of Himalayan communities to extreme weather and glacier-related disasters.
As rescue operations continue, Nepal remains focused on reaching isolated communities, finding those still missing and providing assistance to survivors struggling to rebuild their lives after the catastrophe.
