The Rose Parade, a cherished New Year's Day tradition, returned in grand style this year as thousands gathered in Pasadena, California, for its 136th edition. With vibrant floats, dynamic marching bands, and elegant equestrian displays, the parade drew spectators from around the globe. This year’s theme, “Best Day Ever!”, highlighted life’s joyous moments, as announced by Ed Morales, President of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses.

Despite the celebration, the event carried a somber tone due to a tragic incident in New Orleans, where at least 15 people died, and 30 others were injured after a vehicle rammed into a crowd of New Year’s revelers.

The Origins of the Rose Parade

The Rose Parade began in 1890, organized by the Valley Hunt Club to showcase the mild winters of Southern California. Over the decades, it has evolved into a cultural phenomenon and a staple of New Year’s Day celebrations in the US. NBC News first broadcast the event on radio in 1927, transitioning to television in 1954, further amplifying its global appeal.

Highlights of This Year’s Parade

The 8.85-kilometer-long parade featured an array of floral-decorated floats, skilled equestrian units, and lively marching bands. This year’s event opened with a stunning performance by singers Kiesza and Aloe Blacc, atop a Honda-sponsored float. Their act included a synchronized light show, pyrotechnics, and dancers, followed by a breathtaking B-2 bomber stealth aircraft flyover.

Tennis legend Billie Jean King served as the parade’s Grand Marshal, waving to the crowd from a classic Rolls-Royce Phantom III while donning a striking red blazer.

Participants and Judging

Participants included corporate and community-sponsored floats, equestrian teams, and world-class marching bands. The event’s judging panel—Morgan AndersonBill Brzeski, and Drew Rios—evaluated floats on design, floral presentation, and entertainment value.

A Day of Festivities

The parade is traditionally followed by the Rose Bowl Game, hosted at Pasadena’s historic Rose Bowl Stadium. This combination of sports and spectacle solidifies the event as a hallmark of New Year’s celebrations in the US.

The Rose Parade 2025 was a celebration of joy and resilience, drawing millions of viewers both in-person and online. Its enduring charm ensures it remains a cherished tradition for generations to come.
