Reddit Prioritises Logged-In Experience as Google AI Search Hits Traffic

Table of Contents

Reddit is planning a major shift towards a primarily logged-in platform as declining search traffic and the growing use of artificial intelligence reshape how people access online information. CEO Steve Huffman announced the strategy on October 29, 2026, saying the company intends to test sign-in requirements for most content in selected international markets during the fourth quarter.

The move comes as Reddit faces falling referrals from traditional search engines, particularly Google, where AI-powered features increasingly provide answers directly on search pages instead of sending users to external websites.

Google AI Features Reduce Search Referrals

Reddit reported that search-engine referrals declined by more than one million per week on average during October. CEO Steve Huffman said the decline accelerated towards the end of the third quarter and linked the trend to Google's AI-powered search experience.

The company also reported that its US daily active unique visitors fell 2% year over year to 50.7 million. Global daily active unique visitors stood at approximately 130.3 million during the third quarter.

Huffman argued that Google's AI Mode does not generate meaningful referral traffic for Reddit, even though Google's systems continue crawling the platform's content.

Login-First Strategy Aims to Protect Revenue and Data

Reddit plans to test the logged-in experience in selected markets outside the United States before considering a wider rollout. The strategy is intended to reduce unauthorised data scraping, improve personalisation and strengthen advertising opportunities.

More than 80% of Reddit's monetisation comes from logged-in users, according to company executives. These users provide stronger engagement signals, helping the platform deliver more relevant recommendations and targeted advertising.

Reddit also plans to continue licensing its content to selected AI companies under commercial agreements with specific conditions governing data access and use.

Strong Revenue Growth Despite Traffic Challenges

Despite declining search referrals, Reddit reported third-quarter revenue of $895 million, representing a 53% increase year over year and exceeding analyst expectations. Advertising revenue reached $847 million, supported by stronger demand and improved monetisation.

However, the company warned that daily active unique visitors could decline by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter if search-referral trends continue. Reddit shares fell approximately 18% in extended trading following the announcement.

A Changing Relationship with the Open Internet

The proposed shift represents a significant change for Reddit, which has historically allowed people to browse much of its content without creating an account. The company has not yet confirmed which pages will remain accessible to logged-out visitors or when any broader changes might take place.

The decision highlights a wider challenge for online publishers and digital platforms: AI-powered search tools can deliver information directly to users, reducing visits to the original websites. Reddit's strategy will test whether stronger account-based engagement and advertising revenue can offset the loss of visitors arriving through search engines.
