RCB Scripts Historic WPL Chase as Ghosh, Ahuja Stun Gujarat Giants
Vadodara, February 14, 2025: Richa Ghosh and Kanika Ahuja produced a match-winning partnership to script a remarkable turnaround for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as they chased down 202 runs—the highest successful chase in Women's Premier League (WPL) history—against Gujarat Giants on Wednesday.
Ghosh smashed an unbeaten 64 off 26 balls, while Ahuja’s quickfire 30 off 13 ensured an emphatic six-wicket victory with eight balls to spare. Their 93-run stand off just 37 balls helped RCB recover after Ellyse Perry’s 57-run anchor knock had kept them in the hunt earlier.
Gardner Powers Gujarat to 201
Opting to bat first, Gujarat Giants lost Laura Wolvaardt (6) early, but Beth Mooney (56 off 37) anchored the innings, capitalizing on a missed lbw appeal via DRS to attack the RCB spinners.
However, it was Ashleigh Gardner who stole the show for Gujarat, smashing an unbeaten 79 off just 37 balls. She tore into Prema Rawat and Georgia Wareham, hammering them for three consecutive sixes and propelling the Giants to a daunting 201/5 in 20 overs.
RCB’s Record-Breaking Chase
In response, RCB’s openers started cautiously before Perry held the innings together with a crucial half-century. However, her dismissal in the 12th over left them needing 93 runs from 46 balls.
Just when the game seemed out of reach, Ghosh launched a ruthless assault on Gardner in the 16th over, hitting four boundaries and a six to turn the tide. Ahuja complemented her with fearless strokeplay, guiding RCB to a historic chase—the highest-ever in WPL history.
Match Summary:
Gujarat Giants: 201/5 (Gardner 79, Mooney 56, Renuka 2-25)*
RCB: 202/4 (Ghosh 64, Perry 57, Ahuja 30, Gardner 2-33)**
