Police Case Filed Against Ranveer Allahbadia, Samay Raina, Others Over Controversial Remarks
New Delhi : A police case has been registered against YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia and several others in Assam following public outrage over their controversial remarks made on comedian Samay Raina's show, "India's Got Latent." The accused have been charged with promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit discussions during the show.
Along with the 31-year-old podcaster, others named in the case include prominent social media personalities such as Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Makhija, and Samay Raina. Assam police were the first to initiate legal action, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma publicly acknowledging the move.
Public Uproar and Legal Action
The controversy stems from a remark made by Ranveer Allahbadia during the show, where he posed an inappropriate question to a contestant. The comment sparked widespread criticism, with multiple police complaints being filed against him across the country.
In response, Bombay High Court advocates Ashish Ray and Pankaj Mishra submitted a formal complaint to Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phalsankar and the state women's commission. They asserted that the statements made on the show were offensive and warranted strict action under relevant laws. Additionally, commentator Rahul Easwar has sought an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. A complaint was also filed with Mumbai’s Khar police station by BJP functionary Nilotpal Mrinal Pandey.
Political and Social Reactions
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who expressed strong disapproval of the remarks. "I have been informed about this matter. While I have not personally watched the content, I have been made aware that it was extremely inappropriate. Freedom of speech has its limits, and when it encroaches upon the dignity of others, necessary action must be taken," he stated.
Apology Issued by Ranveer Allahbadia
In response to the mounting backlash, Ranveer Allahbadia issued a public apology through a video message on X (formerly Twitter). He admitted his mistake, stating, "I shouldn't have said what I did on 'India's Got Latent.' I am deeply sorry. My comment was not only inappropriate but also not humorous. Comedy is not my forte, and I sincerely regret my words."
Criticism of "India’s Got Latent"
The show, which provides a platform for various talents, including poetry, magic, comedy, singing, and dancing, has often faced criticism for hosting conversations that cross the line of decency. Many argue that under the guise of humor, participants have made inappropriate and offensive remarks, particularly about women and marginalized groups.
As investigations proceed, the case highlights the growing scrutiny of digital content and the responsibility of influencers in shaping public discourse. Authorities have assured that legal provisions will be strictly enforced to prevent similar incidents in the future.
