Elon Musk Mocks Trudeau Over Canada-US Merger Idea
Elon Musk has stirred controversy by mocking former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a post on social media. Responding to Trudeau's rejection of the idea of a Canada-US merger, Musk quipped, "Girl, you're not the governor of Canada anymore, so it doesn't matter what you say."
Trudeau had dismissed the suggestion, saying, "There isn't a snowball's chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States. Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other's biggest trading and security partner."
The exchange comes as US President-elect Donald Trump continues to float the idea of using "economic force" to integrate Canada into the United States. Trump has argued that the US can no longer sustain what he calls "massive trade deficits and subsidies" supporting Canada's economy. He claims many Canadians would welcome becoming the "51st state."
Trump's comments, including sharing a distorted map showing Canada as part of the US captioned "Oh Canada!", have sparked outrage among Canadian leaders. Trudeau and others have emphasized the importance of the US-Canada partnership while rejecting the merger idea outright.
Canadian MP Pierre Poilievre also weighed in, declaring, "Canada will never be the 51st state. Period. We are a great and independent country." He outlined Canada’s contributions to US security and energy supply, pledging to prioritize Canada’s sovereignty and military strength if elected Prime Minister.
Musk responded to Poilievre’s remarks by stating, "A referendum of the people is the essence of democracy!" His comments have added fuel to an already heated debate over the future of US-Canada relations.
As Trump prepares to take office, his controversial proposal is expected to face significant resistance from lawmakers, law enforcement, and the public. The situation remains highly contentious, with Musk's remarks drawing mixed reactions online.
