DeepSeek and Huawei Team Up on AI Chip Software to Cut Dependence on Nvidia

Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek is partnering with Huawei Technologies to develop software tools optimized for Huawei’s Ascend AI chips, in another sign that China’s technology industry is working to build alternatives to Nvidia’s dominant AI-computing ecosystem.

DeepSeek said it is making parts of its programming infrastructure for Huawei’s Ascend platform open source, including computing and communication libraries. The collaboration is intended to make it easier for AI developers to build and run advanced models on domestic Chinese hardware.

DeepSeek Brings Its Software Expertise to Ascend

A key part of the collaboration is TileLang, an open-source programming language and compiler technology designed to make it easier to develop high-performance AI applications.

DeepSeek said the tools are designed to simplify programming while helping developers extract more performance from Huawei’s hardware. The approach could provide Chinese developers with an alternative software environment to Nvidia’s widely used CUDA platform.

TileLang-Ascend is already being developed as a specialized system for Huawei’s Ascend neural-processing units, supporting workloads such as matrix calculations and attention mechanisms used in modern AI models.

Huawei Wants to Build a Full AI Computing Ecosystem

The partnership comes as Huawei expands its Ascend chip business and develops a broader technology stack around its processors.

Huawei has been building not only AI accelerators but also networking, storage and other infrastructure needed to connect large numbers of chips together. The company recently highlighted its next-generation Ascend processors and large-scale AI computing systems as part of its broader strategy.

For China, developing software that can work efficiently with domestic chips is particularly important because U.S. export restrictions have limited Chinese companies’ access to some of Nvidia’s most advanced processors.

A Challenge to Nvidia’s Software Advantage

Nvidia’s strength in AI computing is not based only on its chips. Its CUDA software ecosystem has become a major part of the company’s competitive advantage because developers can use a large library of tools and applications designed specifically for Nvidia hardware.

DeepSeek and Huawei are therefore addressing a key part of the challenge faced by Chinese AI companies: creating software that allows domestic processors to compete more effectively in real-world AI workloads.

DeepSeek’s latest move builds on its growing use of Huawei technology and its broader effort to increase reliance on domestic computing resources. Reuters has reported that the company has been working toward using more Chinese-made chips for training its AI models.

China’s AI Chip Industry Gains Momentum

The agreement reflects a wider push in China to strengthen the country's AI hardware and software ecosystem.

Huawei has increasingly emerged as one of the leading suppliers of high-performance AI chips in China, while companies across the country are working to optimize models and software for alternative processors. Reuters has described Huawei as becoming an important domestic alternative as U.S. restrictions affect access to advanced Nvidia hardware.

The development of programming tools tailored to Ascend chips could help reduce one of the biggest barriers to broader adoption: the need for developers to rewrite and optimize software for different hardware architectures.

The Bigger AI Race

The DeepSeek-Huawei partnership is part of a larger technology competition in which chips, software and AI models are increasingly developing together.

For DeepSeek, closer integration with Huawei could provide more options for computing capacity. For Huawei, working with a prominent AI model developer could help strengthen the software ecosystem around its Ascend processors.

The immediate goal is not to replace Nvidia globally, but to make China's domestic AI stack more capable and easier for developers to use. As AI demand continues to grow, the ability to combine competitive chips with effective programming tools could become just as important as raw hardware performance.
