Trump Confirms Dinner With Anthropic CEO as AI Safety Debate Intensifies

U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed plans to meet Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, as Washington and the artificial intelligence industry continue to debate how quickly advanced AI should develop and what safeguards should be put in place.

Trump said he planned to have dinner with Amodei on September 27, confirming earlier reports of the private meeting. The discussion comes as Amodei and other technology leaders have called for greater safeguards around increasingly capable AI systems.

Trump Opposes Slowing AI Development

Trump has continued to argue that the United States should maintain a rapid pace of AI development rather than introduce measures that could slow the industry.

Speaking to Fox News, he said the U.S. is currently ahead of China in AI and argued that additional regulation could give Beijing an opportunity to narrow the gap. Trump said maintaining U.S. technological leadership was more important than slowing development because of concerns over potential AI risks.

Amodei has taken a different position on the pace of AI development. The Anthropic chief has warned that AI systems are becoming increasingly powerful and has supported stronger safeguards and monitoring.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has also called for lawmakers and law-enforcement agencies to be involved in establishing safeguards and monitoring requirements for advanced AI systems. Gates said regulation should address potential risks without unnecessarily preventing technological development.

At the same time, companies including OpenAI have called for international cooperation on AI standards, reflecting growing concern about how the technology should be governed as systems become more capable.
