Skype revolutionized online communication after its launch in 2003, offering affordable audio and video calls. However, the platform struggled to compete with modern rivals like Zoom and Slack, especially in the smartphone era.

Microsoft, which acquired Skype for $8.5 billion in 2011, has been shifting focus to Teams, integrating it with Office apps to serve business users.
