Maha Kumbh 2025: Surge in Devotees Leads to Increased Garbage in Ganga, Yamuna

Table of Contents

The ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj has drawn millions of devotees, but it has also resulted in a significant rise in river pollution due to offerings and waste left behind by pilgrims. Trash skimmers are now operating extensively, removing 10 to 15 tons of garbage daily to ensure clean waters at the Sangam.

Massive Increase in River Waste

Pilgrims bring various religious offerings for the holy dip in the Ganga and Yamuna, leading to a surge in waste, including:

  • Flowers, garlands, incense sticks
  • Plastic wrappers, bottles, and clothes
  • Coconuts and other religious items

Officials report a 20-fold increase in garbage collection compared to normal conditions. Before Maha Kumbh, the trash skimmer used to collect around 50–60 quintals per day, but this number has dramatically risen since the event began.

Efforts to Keep the Rivers Clean

To combat pollution, the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation has deployed additional cleaning measures:

  • Trash skimmers now cover a 4 km stretch, from Sangam to other key areas like the boat club.
  • A second machine was purchased two years ago, doubling the cleaning capacity.
  • The skimmers have a 13 cubic meter capacity and help clean both the Ganga and Yamuna.

Waste Disposal Process

Collected waste is first dumped at a site near Naini and then transported to a processing plant in Baswar for proper disposal.

About the Trash Skimmer Machine

  • Collects floating waste from rivers, ports, and seas.

  • Removes plastic, metal objects, religious waste, and even dead animals.
  • Improves water quality for millions of devotees performing rituals.

Future Measures

With the number of devotees expected to rise, officials are considering additional cleaning mechanisms to prevent further environmental damage. Authorities continue to urge pilgrims to dispose of waste responsibly to maintain the sanctity of the rivers.
