Table of Contents

From the quiet banks of a polder canal near Amsterdam to the forefront of Europe’s energy transition, Heleen Groenenberg’s journey is one of vision, strategy, and purpose. Growing up in the western Netherlands, Heleen witnessed early on how rapid development impacted local communities, an experience that planted the seeds of her lifelong commitment to sustainable solutions.

With a natural inclination toward geography and sustainability, Heleen pursued academic excellence that culminated in a PhD in international climate policy. Her career took off in the high-stakes world of climate and energy consulting, where she advised influential stakeholders including governments, the European Commission, and major energy and financial institutions. Her expertise spanned critical areas such as demand-side energy response, storage systems, and grid congestion, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in a net-zero future.

Over the years, Heleen’s growing conviction about the importance of local energy systems led to the founding of her own business, Sustain Brain. With a unique strategic approach that emphasizes understanding and planning over off-the-shelf solutions, Sustain Brain helps governments and companies turn climate ambitions into actionable energy projects. Her ability to connect the dots between technology, regulation, and community participation sets her apart in an industry often dominated by siloed solutions.

This article explores Heleen’s powerful mission, her innovative business model, and her broader vision of transforming the energy sector from the ground up. As you follow her path, you’ll discover how one woman’s drive to create impact at the local level is contributing to a more sustainable global future.

Early Inspirations and Academic Pursuits

Tell us about your early life, education, and what led you to start your business?

I grew up in the western Netherlands as the eldest of two children in a family that valued love and perspective. Our home bordered a polder canal near Amsterdam airport, where I witnessed firsthand how unchecked development affected local communities. While my childhood was happy, I was eager to pursue education elsewhere.

Geography and sustainability captured my interest early on, eventually leading me to complete a PhD in international climate policy. I then spent many years as a climate and energy consultant, advising governments, the European Commission, energy companies, and financial institutions on strategies toward a net-zero economy. For the national transmission system operator, I worked on industrial demand-side response and energy storage solutions, while also coordinating pilots for energy hubs on industrial estates to address grid congestion.

Over time, I became convinced that developing local energy systems is crucial for advancing renewable energy. Such systems not only reduce peak loads on regional and national grids but also enable citizen participation in renewable projects, significantly lowering capital costs. This insight, that the next phase of the energy transition requires robust local energy systems with flexibility and storage capabilities, ultimately inspired me to launch my own business.

Founding Sustain Brain: Strategy Over Solutions

What is your business, and what makes it unique in the market?

My business Sustain Brain (https://sustainbrain.nl) provides strategic support for developing local energy systems, working with both governments and companies. I specialize in translating ambitious goals into actionable plans by identifying needs and obstacles, then systematically addressing each one.

What distinguishes my approach is that I'm not selling a single solution. Many companies in this space focus exclusively on energy management systems, trading platforms, or specific storage technologies, and there are many offerings around. What local governments and businesses truly need first is a clear understanding of how local energy systems could benefit them, and guidance on appropriate implementation steps. I provide this strategic perspective while connecting clients with my extensive network of technical solution providers.

A Breakthrough Business Model

What is one key achievement or a milestone your business has reached?

We've developed a business model enabling direct electricity supply from renewable assets to consumers, bypassing the traditional electricity market. Rather than building renewable business cases on operational subsidies and fluctuating market prices, our model establishes agreed prices directly with end users.

This approach can serve businesses with predictable electricity pricing, but we've also adapted it to benefit individual citizens. Through energy communities, participants can consume locally produced renewable electricity at agreed rates. This gives them a direct stake in local production and incentivizes co-investment in generation assets. Since they benefit from predictable energy bills, they're willing to accept modest or even minimal returns on investment, unlocking low-cost capital for renewable energy developers.

Scaling Vision, Locally and Globally

What are your future goals for the business?

I aim to establish my business as a leader in the energy transition, building on our vision of local energy systems as catalysts for change. In the near term, I'll focus on developing more smart energy concepts through close collaboration with partners, accelerating the implementation of local energy systems.

This work necessarily involves supporting the development of enabling regulatory frameworks. While initially focusing on the Dutch market, I plan to partner with key players abroad, both within and beyond the EU. I'll measure success through customer growth, repeat business, and increased brand visibility.

Ultimately, these business goals are milestones in my larger mission: building an energy system that supports the transition to a net-zero economy.

Learning, Listening, and Leading

How do you stay competitive in your industry?

Staying competitive begins with continuous learning. In this rapidly evolving sector, you must stay current on energy market dynamics, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies like thermal storage and AI applications. I constantly deepen my expertise in specialized areas such as grid integration challenges and renewable energy economics, while developing a comprehensive understanding of how technology, finance, policy, and digital transformation intersect.

Building relationships is equally crucial, not just with customers, but with industrial stakeholders, technology providers, service companies, and knowledge communities.

Finally, competitiveness requires close customer contact to understand needs and constraints, coupled with an unwavering commitment to quality. Recommendations must be supported by rigorous analysis and meticulous attention to detail, generating measurable benefits whether in cost reduction, carbon savings, or business risk mitigation.

Words of Wisdom for Future Entrepreneurs

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

Find your niche instead of chasing the latest trend. Identify underserved markets or develop a truly compelling proposition that differentiates you from established players.

Surround yourself with the right people, both advisors and team members, who bring complementary skills across energy technologies, financing options, and market development. Establish strategic alliances with organizations that can provide credibility or customer access, including universities, utilities, and technology providers.

Prepare for a lengthy business development period. Start small and demonstrate tangible returns for investors.

While immediate focus may necessarily be on customer needs, never lose sight of your broader impact. Your contribution to the energy transition will ultimately be your license to operate in the long run. Find the sweet spot where business opportunity meets meaningful decarbonization, and articulate this vision clearly.

Overall, the energy sector offers tremendous entrepreneurial opportunities. With persistence, strategic focus, and the right expertise, you can build a venture that succeeds commercially while helping solve one of our most critical global challenges.
