India’s Household Gold Holdings Surpass Reserves of Top 10 Central Banks

Table of Contents

NEW DELHI – India’s fascination with gold has once again reached record levels, with household gold holdings surpassing the combined reserves of the world’s top 10 central banks, according to a recent study by HSBC Global.

Currently, Indian households possess an estimated 25,000 tonnes of gold, significantly outpacing the gold reserves of leading economies. For comparison, the United States, which tops the global gold reserves list, holds 8,133 tonnes, while other major central banks—including Germany (3,300 tonnes), Italy, France, Russia, China, Switzerland, India, Japan, and Turkey—collectively hold less than India's private stockpile.

Gold as a Safe-Haven Asset

Despite fluctuations in global gold prices, Indians continue to invest heavily in gold, viewing it as a safe-haven asset that provides security against inflation and economic uncertainty. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) also maintains significant gold reserves, holding 876.18 tonnes as of December 2024.

Gold has historically played a cultural, economic, and investment role in India, with weddings, festivals, and religious ceremonies driving demand. Analysts note that India’s gold obsession is deeply rooted in its history, with households traditionally passing gold down through generations as a symbol of wealth and financial security.

Impact on the Economy

India’s enormous private gold reserves pose both challenges and opportunities for the economy. While they reflect the country’s strong affinity for gold, they also contribute to higher gold imports, impacting the trade deficit. The government has launched various initiatives, such as gold monetization schemes, to encourage households to deposit their gold in banks rather than hoarding it.

With global economic uncertainties and inflation concerns persisting, India’s love for gold is unlikely to wane anytime soon, reinforcing its status as one of the world’s largest consumers of the precious metal.
