IMF Says AI Investment Supports Global Growth at Around 3%, with Asia Set to Benefit
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says rising investment in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure is helping support global economic growth at around 3%, even as higher energy costs and geopolitical tensions create fresh challenges. The growing demand for AI technology is also benefiting several Asian economies that supply the hardware and components needed to power the industry.
AI Investment Helps Sustain Global Growth
According to IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is providing an important boost to economic activity. Technology companies are investing heavily in data centres, computing systems, and advanced chips to meet growing demand for AI services.
This investment is supporting businesses involved in technology production and supply chains. However, the IMF has also warned that the economic benefits remain uneven, with some countries gaining more than others depending on their involvement in the technology sector.
Asia Emerges as a Major Beneficiary
Asian economies are well positioned to benefit from the AI investment boom because many play a significant role in manufacturing semiconductors, electronic components, and other essential hardware. Countries such as Thailand and other regional technology suppliers could see stronger economic activity as global demand increases.
The IMF estimates that AI-related developments could raise economic growth by 0.5 to 1 percentage point in advanced Asian economies and by 0.2 to 0.8 percentage point in emerging Asian economies. The extent of these gains will depend on how effectively countries attract investment and integrate AI into their industries.
Economic Risks Remain Despite AI Momentum
Despite the positive outlook, the global economy continues to face challenges from elevated energy prices, geopolitical uncertainty, and rising public debt. Higher energy costs can increase business expenses and inflation, potentially reducing the benefits generated by technology investment.
There are also concerns that high expectations surrounding AI companies could create financial market risks if investment fails to deliver the anticipated productivity and earnings gains. The IMF has stressed the importance of managing these risks while ensuring that AI development remains sustainable.
What Lies Ahead for the Global Economy?
AI investment is becoming an increasingly important driver of economic growth, particularly for countries connected to global technology supply chains. However, long-term benefits will depend on more than infrastructure spending alone.
Governments and businesses will need to invest in workforce skills, reliable energy supplies, digital infrastructure, and responsible AI adoption. If managed effectively, AI could improve productivity and support economic growth over time, although its benefits are unlikely to be distributed equally across countries and industries.
