Alibaba Expands Qwen AI to Cars, Enabling Voice-Based Bookings and Services

Chinese technology giant Alibaba has announced the expansion of its Qwen artificial intelligence model into vehicles from several major automakers, marking a significant step in the evolution of in-car digital services.

The announcement was made at the Beijing Auto Show 2026, where the company confirmed partnerships with leading automotive brands including BYD and joint ventures linked to Volkswagen. The move comes as automakers seek new ways to attract buyers amid slowing growth in the electric vehicle market.

Alibaba’s Qwen AI system is designed to enable a range of voice-activated services within vehicles. Drivers will be able to order food, book hotels, purchase tickets and track deliveries using natural voice commands, without needing to interact with traditional interfaces.

The technology combines on-device processing with cloud-based computing to interpret commands and execute multi-step tasks. It is also built to function in environments with limited network connectivity, improving reliability for users on the move.

Automakers set to integrate the system include Geely, Li Auto, Changan Automobile, Dongfeng Motor Corporation, BAIC Group, Great Wall Motor and SAIC Motor, among others.

The rollout builds on earlier deployments, including integration into models from FAW Group’s Hongqi brand, where the system was introduced in a plug-in hybrid vehicle earlier this year.

The expansion highlights a broader shift within the automotive sector, where software capabilities and digital ecosystems are becoming key differentiators. With competition intensifying and demand growth moderating, carmakers are increasingly focusing on advanced in-car technologies to enhance user experience and drive sales.

Other companies are also advancing similar strategies. A China-specific version of Audi announced plans to integrate artificial intelligence features from ByteDance and iFlyTek into its upcoming electric SUV model, while Cadillac showcased voice-assistant capabilities linked to AI systems at the event.

Industry observers say the growing integration of AI into vehicles signals a shift toward more connected and service-oriented mobility, where cars function not only as transportation tools but also as digital platforms capable of handling everyday tasks.
