Mark Zuckerberg Criticizes Apple: "Steve Jobs Invented iPhone, Apple Just Sitting On It for 20 Years"

In a recent appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg took aim at tech giant Apple, accusing the company of stagnating in terms of innovation. Zuckerberg praised the iPhone for its role in revolutionizing global connectivity but criticized Apple for failing to push the boundaries of technology in recent years.

"Steve Jobs invented the iPhone, and now they're just kind of sitting on it 20 years later," Zuckerberg said, lamenting the lack of significant upgrades in newer iPhone models. He noted that iPhone sales have been struggling due to a lack of groundbreaking innovations, calling Apple's approach of incremental updates insufficient to keep up with consumer demand for fresh, exciting technology.

Apple's "Arbitrary Rules" and Developer Restrictions

Zuckerberg also took issue with Apple's strict rules on developers, accusing the company of imposing arbitrary restrictions that stifle innovation. He highlighted Apple's 30% commission fee on developers as an example of the company's attempts to "squeeze people" for profit. Furthermore, Zuckerberg pointed to Apple's peripheral products like AirPods, claiming that while they are popular, Apple has created a closed ecosystem that prevents third-party developers from building compatible products that can connect to the iPhone in the same way.

"Their business model has been about squeezing more money out of consumers and developers, rather than creating innovative products," Zuckerberg remarked. He further suggested that if Apple relaxed these restrictions, Meta’s profits could significantly increase.

Zuckerberg Challenges Apple's Stance on Privacy and Security

The Meta CEO also took issue with Apple's approach to privacy and security, which the company frequently uses to justify its strict policies. Zuckerberg argued that Apple could improve its security measures and encryption protocols, rather than limiting third-party access to the iPhone platform.

"It's insecure because you didn’t build any security into it," Zuckerberg said, claiming that Apple's current policies were more about control than actual protection. He suggested that improving the security infrastructure would allow third-party products to seamlessly integrate with Apple devices, benefiting both developers and consumers alike.

Apple’s Vision Pro: A Missed Opportunity?

In addition to his criticism of Apple's core products, Zuckerberg weighed in on Apple's Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, which has not performed well in the market. "I think the Vision Pro is one of the bigger swings they've taken in a while, but the V1 definitely did not hit it out of the park," he said, referring to the disappointing sales of the headset.

Zuckerberg's comments underscore his belief that Apple’s reluctance to take bold risks and its focus on maintaining control over its ecosystem may limit the company's long-term growth and innovation.
