Trump Proposes US-Canada "Merger" After Trudeau Resignation
Just hours after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation, US President-elect Donald Trump reignited his proposal to make Canada the 51st state of the United States.
Trump, 78, shared his thoughts on Truth Social, claiming that a merger would eliminate trade deficits, lower taxes, and secure Canada against threats from Russian and Chinese ships. “Together, what a great nation it would be!” he stated.
This isn’t the first time Trump has floated the idea. He has mentioned it multiple times since his November 5 electoral victory and previously referred to Trudeau as the “Governor of the Great State of Canada.”
The Canadian government has yet to officially respond to Trump’s proposal. However, Trump warned of imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian imports if issues like illicit drug flow and illegal migration from Canada to the US are not addressed.
Trudeau, 53, announced his resignation Monday but will remain in office until the Liberal Party selects a new leader ahead of Canada’s upcoming elections.
