Total Energies ramps up refinery output to secure France’s fuel supply
Total Energies has increased production at its Gonfreville refinery to full capacity in an effort to secure fuel supplies in France amid ongoing disruptions in global energy markets.
The refinery, located near Le Havre, is now operating at 100% capacity to maintain steady domestic supplies of key fuels, including diesel and kerosene, as international supply routes remain constrained.
The move comes as difficulties in sourcing refined products from overseas intensify, particularly due to disruptions in major oil transit routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
Gonfreville, France’s largest refinery, processes approximately 250,000 barrels of crude oil per day and plays a critical role in supporting the country’s energy needs.
Supply chains have also been affected by shipping delays, with many tankers rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope instead of passing through the Suez Canal. The longer route has increased transit times and tightened fuel availability across European markets.
Industry analysts said the focus on producing middle distillates, such as diesel and jet fuel, is aimed at supporting sectors most exposed to supply disruptions, including logistics and aviation.
By maximising domestic refining output, TotalEnergies is seeking to reduce reliance on volatile international supply chains and stabilise fuel availability for consumers.
The company said operations at the refinery are being optimised to maximise efficiency, with all units functioning at full capacity to increase output of high-demand fuels.
Despite the increased production levels, TotalEnergies said safety and environmental standards remain a priority, with operations monitored to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
The company’s efforts are aimed at building sufficient fuel reserves to mitigate potential shortages and cushion the impact of further geopolitical disruptions.
