A tornado damaged part of Rivian’s manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois over the weekend, impacting an area tied to the company’s upcoming R2 electric vehicle.

The incident was confirmed by CEO RJ Scaringe in a message to employees, stating that the tornado struck a section of the plant used for parts storage and logistics.

The damaged building has been temporarily closed for assessment, though operations in the affected area are expected to resume later this week.

No Injuries, Core Operations Continue

The company said no injuries were reported. Key production areas, including assembly lines, remain operational and unaffected by the damage.

The factory was hit during a severe weather event described by the National Weather Service as a “significant tornado outbreak” across the upper Midwest.

Tornadoes in the region were classified as EF1, with peak wind speeds reaching approximately 100 mph.

Impact on R2 Launch

The damaged section of the facility plays a role in logistics for Rivian’s upcoming R2 model, which is expected to launch this spring.

While the disruption appears limited, the incident comes at a critical time for the company as it prepares for the rollout of the new vehicle.
