Kottayam, Kerala : In a shocking case of ragging at Kottayam Government Nursing Collegefive senior students have been arrested for the brutal assault and abuse of first-year students. The Kerala government has vowed strict action, while the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from the state police within 10 days.

Arrests and Disturbing Allegations

The arrested students—Rahul Raj, NS Jeeva, NP Vivek, Rigil Jeeth, and Samuel Johnson—have been accused of subjecting juniors to months of physical and mental abuse since November 2024. A viral video capturing the incident has sparked national outrage, showing a junior student tied to a bed, assaulted with sharp objects, and forced to endure degrading acts.

According to police investigations, the accused also coerced juniors into transferring money to fund their liquor purchases on Sundays. Some victims reported being threatened at knifepoint, while others were allegedly tortured with sharp weapons and lotions poured on their bodies.

Government and NHRC Response

Terming the incident "morally reprehensible," the NHRC has called for urgent action and strict enforcement of anti-ragging laws. Kerala’s Health Minister Veena George confirmed that the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) has received a preliminary report and has already suspended the accused students.

“We will ensure justice for the victims. A team of senior officials has been sent to investigate the hostel where the incidents took place,” Ms. George said.

Political Reactions and Legal Action

The Congress-led UDF opposition has alleged that the accused have links with the Left-backed Students’ Federation of India (SFI), an allegation strongly denied by both the SFI and Kerala’s Higher Education Minister R Bindu.

“This is a serious crime, and action will be taken against the accused, irrespective of their affiliations,” Ms. Bindu said.

The arrested students face charges under the Prohibition of Ragging Act and multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Authorities have assured that further arrests could follow as investigations continue.
