Kolkata – The highly anticipated IPL 2025 season opener between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens on March 22 faces a possible weather disruption, with rain forecasted for match day.

According to a bulletin from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Kolkata is under an orange alert, with predictions of light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds through Saturday. These weather conditions have already impacted both teams' preparations, forcing them to cut short training sessions on Friday due to evening showers.

Weather Impact on Training and Preparations

The build-up to the IPL opener has already seen intermittent rain in Kolkata throughout the week. Earlier, a KKR intra-squad practice match was abandoned after just one innings, while rain showers on Wednesday and Thursday allowed both teams to train but under overcast conditions.

However, Friday’s downpour halted practice early, with ground staff at Eden Gardens working swiftly to protect the playing surface, which is equipped with full ground covers. The uncertainty over weather remains a concern, as heavy showers on match day could lead to delays or even a reduced-overs contest.

Match Timing and Contingency Plans

The KKR vs RCB fixture is scheduled for a 7:30 PM IST start, with the toss set for 7:00 PM IST. The IPL regulations allow for a one-hour extension window, meaning the latest cut-off for a minimum five-over-per-side match is 10:56 PM, with play needing to conclude by 12:06 AM.

In case of a no result, both teams will be awarded one point each.
