New Delhi — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto added a touch of humor to an official dinner hosted by Indian President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday, claiming he has “Indian DNA.” The lighthearted comment sparked laughter among dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

Recounting his recent genetic sequencing results, Mr. Subianto said, “A few weeks ago, I had my DNA tested, and they told me I have Indian DNA. Everybody knows when I hear Indian music, I start dancing.” His playful remark set a jovial tone for the evening and highlighted the deep cultural and historical ties between India and Indonesia.

The Indonesian President further elaborated on the shared heritage of the two nations. “India and Indonesia have a long, ancient history together. We have civilizational links. Even now, a very important part of our language comes from Sanskrit. Many Indonesian names are of Sanskrit origin, and in our daily life, the influence of ancient Indian civilization is very strong. I think it’s also part of our genetics,” he remarked.

Praise for PM Modi’s Leadership

During his address, Mr. Subianto lauded Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and his commitment to improving the lives of the marginalized. “I am not a professional politician or a good diplomat; I speak from the heart. I came here for a few days but learned a lot from Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. His commitment to alleviating poverty and helping the weakest sections of society is truly inspiring,” he said.

The Indonesian President extended warm wishes to the people of India, expressing his desire for closer ties between the two nations. “I wish prosperity, peace, and greatness to the people of India and hope Indonesia and India continue as close partners and friends,” he added.

Republic Day Celebrations

Mr. Subianto was the Chief Guest at India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations, accompanied by a high-level delegation, including senior Indonesian ministers and officials. The event also featured the Genderang Suling Canka Lokananta, a 190-member ensemble band from the Indonesian Military Academy, which showcased Indonesia’s discipline and military tradition.

During his three-day visit, India and Indonesia signed and renewed five key agreements across various fields, including health, traditional medicine, and maritime security. The visit underscored the strengthening ties between the two nations and their shared commitment to fostering cooperation.
