Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah's Funeral Set for February 23 Amid Leadership Transition
The funeral for Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike last September, is scheduled to take place on February 23, according to an announcement by the group's current chief, Naim Qassem.
In a televised speech, Qassem also revealed for the first time that senior Hezbollah official Hashem Safieddine had been chosen as Nasrallah’s successor. However, Safieddine was killed in an Israeli raid in October, just days before his appointment could be officially announced. His funeral will also be held on February 23.
Postponed Funeral Due to Conflict
Nasrallah’s funeral had been delayed due to ongoing hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel, which escalated into months of intense fighting before a ceasefire took effect on November 27.
"After security conditions prevented us from holding a funeral, Hezbollah has decided to organize a grand public ceremony on February 23 for Nasrallah," Qassem stated.
Final Resting Places
Nasrallah will be laid to rest on the outskirts of Beirut, in a plot of land located between the old and new airport roads. Meanwhile, Safieddine will be buried in his hometown of Deir Qanun in southern Lebanon.
The announcement marks a critical moment for Hezbollah, as the group moves forward with leadership changes in the wake of the deaths of two of its top figures. The funerals are expected to draw large crowds of supporters and regional allies, highlighting Nasrallah’s long-standing influence and the uncertain future of Hezbollah’s leadership.
