China Tests 10-MW Truck-Mounted Nuclear Reactor for AI Data Centres
China is testing a compact 10-megawatt (MW) nuclear reactor mounted on a truck, designed to provide mobile power for AI data centres and remote locations.
The prototype has been developed by a research team led by Professor Wu Yican at the Institute of Nuclear Energy Safety Technology. It is currently in the testing and safety evaluation phase.
The reactor is designed to operate for decades without refueling and can provide a stable and continuous power supply. Experts say a single unit can support a medium-sized AI data centre.
Apart from data centres, the mobile reactor can also be used in remote areas, emergency situations, military bases, and construction sites. It may also have future applications in maritime and space systems.
The project is part of a broader push toward small and compact nuclear systems that can deliver reliable power without relying on traditional fossil fuels.
