Anthropic IPO Filing Expected to Flag AI Backlash as Investor Risk
The Claude developer has reportedly been holding early meetings with bankers and investors in San Francisco as it moves closer to a public listing. Discussions have focused on competition, pressure from open-source AI models, infrastructure costs, and the potential impact of slower data center development.
Anthropic confidentially filed for an initial public offering in June. The company is currently valued at close to $1 trillion in private markets, while some investors believe a public-market valuation could approach $2 trillion.
Public resistance to AI infrastructure has become an increasingly important issue for the industry. A Gallup survey released in May found that seven in 10 Americans opposed the construction of AI data centers in their local areas, raising questions about whether regulatory and political pressure could slow infrastructure expansion.
The issue is also gaining political attention in the United States. Lawmakers and state leaders have proposed tougher rules around data center development, including restrictions related to energy use, location and environmental impact.
For AI companies such as Anthropic, access to computing infrastructure is closely linked to their ability to train advanced models, serve customers and expand revenue. Any delay in building new data centers or securing additional computing capacity could therefore affect future growth.
Anthropic has also been expanding rapidly. The company recently surpassed an annualized revenue run rate of about $65 billion, highlighting the scale of demand for its AI products and services.
The expected disclosure shows how public sentiment, infrastructure constraints and regulation are becoming important financial considerations as leading AI companies prepare for the public markets.
