Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian Buys Minority Stake in Chelsea FC Women
Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit and prominent advocate for women’s sports, has acquired a minority stake in Chelsea FC Women, further expanding his presence in the global sports ownership landscape.
Ohanian invested £20 million for a 10% stake in the English club, according to a person familiar with the transaction. The deal values the club at £200 million, making Chelsea FC Women the most valuable women’s sports team in the world based on current exchange rates.
Building a Global Brand
As part of the agreement, Ohanian will take a seat on the club’s board. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he confirmed the deal, saying, “I’ve bet big on women’s sports before — and I’m doing it again.”
“I’m confident Chelsea FC Women is the next global women’s sports brand,” he added.
Chelsea FC Women have won six consecutive Women’s Super League titles, and Ohanian views the team as a platform to build a powerful international brand in women’s football.
Ties to Angel City FC and Legacy Building
Ohanian is also a co-owner of Angel City FC, a Los Angeles-based National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) club. That team includes other high-profile investors such as Disney CEO Bob Iger and journalist Willow Bay.
In 2024, Ohanian revealed that he invested $250,000 from his daughters’ trust fund into Angel City FC, making them the youngest owners in professional sports and, according to him, multi-millionaires.
Ohanian stepped down from Reddit’s board in 2020, citing a personal mission to focus on building a future for his daughters through sports investments and equity-driven projects.
Expanding Women’s Sports Footprint
Ohanian’s latest move adds to a growing list of women’s sports ventures. His wife, tennis star Serena Williams, recently became a part owner of the WNBA expansion team Toronto Tempo, while Ohanian has launched a new women’s track competition to further support female athletes.
His commitment continues to position him as one of the leading private investors in women’s sports globally.
