Virat Kohli’s Ranji Trophy Comeback Creates a Frenzy, Delhi Police Caught Off Guard

New Delhi – Cricket enthusiasts and media personnel flocked to the Arun Jaitley Stadium as Virat Kohli made his much-anticipated return to domestic cricket after more than a decade. The former India captain, who last played a Ranji Trophy match in 2012, is set to feature in Delhi's upcoming clash against Railways. His participation follows the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) directive requiring national players to be actively involved in domestic tournaments.

While Ranji Trophy matches usually attract moderate public interest, Kohli’s presence turned the pre-match atmosphere into a spectacle. An unusual scene unfolded at the Virender Sehwag Gate of the stadium, where a bewildered Delhi Police officer found himself seeking reinforcements.

Unprepared for the Buzz: Delhi Police Requests More Security

According to reports, as journalists and camerapersons gathered in large numbers, a surprised sub-inspector, Pradeep Rana, promptly informed his superior, stating, "Sir, there are too many people here. We might need additional security. Please send more personnel." The unexpected turnout highlighted the immense popularity Kohli commands, regardless of the format or level of cricket.

Kohli Declines Captaincy, Supports Young Leadership

Despite his stature in Indian cricket, Kohli has opted out of the captaincy role for Delhi. The team management reportedly approached him with the offer, but he insisted that young batter Ayush Badoni should continue leading the side.

“Virat was asked if he wanted to take over the captaincy, but he graciously declined, saying Ayush should continue,” an official from the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) revealed on the condition of anonymity. Kohli's decision reflects his commitment to fostering young talent while focusing solely on his own game.

BCCI Revises Broadcast Plans After Fan Outcry

Initially, the BCCI and domestic broadcaster JioCinema had no plans to telecast the match, as their pre-scheduled lineup featured Karnataka vs Haryana—where KL Rahul was the main attraction—as the premier televised game. Meanwhile, Punjab vs Bengal and Baroda vs Jammu & Kashmir were set for online streaming only.

However, as social media erupted in protest over the absence of Kohli’s match from the broadcast lineup, the BCCI intervened. A senior official confirmed that JioCinema will now live-stream the game, ensuring fans across the country can watch their favorite cricketer in action.

“A decision has been made, and JioCinema will stream the match live. Fans who aren’t in Delhi need not worry—they can catch all the action from wherever they are,” a BCCI source told PTI.

Anticipation at an All-Time High

With Kohli back in domestic cricket, expectations are sky-high. His presence is not just a boost for Delhi but also a significant moment for the Ranji Trophy, which has often struggled to draw attention amid the dominance of international and franchise cricket.

As the excitement builds, all eyes will be on the Arun Jaitley Stadium when Delhi takes on Railways. With security heightened and fans eager for a glimpse of the cricketing icon, Kohli’s return promises to be one of the most memorable moments of this Ranji Trophy season.
