US Economy ‘Strong’, Growth May Exceed 3.5% in 2026: Bessent

Table of Contents

The US economy remains strong and is expected to grow above 3.5% in 2026, according to Scott Bessent.

Speaking at a Wall Street Journal Opinion Live event in Washington, Bessent said robust consumer demand and business resilience continue to support economic expansion.

He noted that despite concerns around inflation, borrowing costs, and global uncertainties, the underlying fundamentals of the US economy remain solid.

Bessent also indicated that US tariffs imposed on several countries could return to earlier levels by July. This follows a February ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States, which found that Donald Trump had exceeded his authority in implementing broad global tariffs under emergency law.

A growth rate above 3% would represent a strong expansion by historical standards, suggesting that both consumers and businesses in the US continue to drive economic activity at a healthy pace.
