As Southern California battles devastating wildfires, specialized aircraft known as "Super Scoopers" have become a critical asset in firefighting efforts. How Super Scoopers Outperform Traditional Methods
Compared to helicopters equipped with buckets and conventional air tankers, Super Scoopers are far more efficient. According to a report from The Washington Post, these aircraft can gather up to 1,600 gallons of water in a single trip—significantly surpassing the capacity of helicopter buckets. Unlike air tankers, which must land to refill, Super Scoopers skim over nearby water bodies at approximately 160 km/h, collecting water swiftly and returning to the fire zone without delays.

The Technology Behind Super Scoopers
The CL-415 aircraft boasts a wingspan of 93 feet and a length of 65 feet. Its advanced system allows for water to be mixed with foam concentrate, enhancing its effectiveness in suppressing flames. The water tanks can be filled in just 12 seconds as the aircraft glides over a lake or reservoir, scooping up water through specially designed probes. Alternatively, hoses can be used to fill the tanks manually.

Once loaded, the aircraft can travel to fire-affected areas at speeds reaching 350 km/h. Pilots have the option to release the entire load in one burst or distribute the water sequentially through four doors, covering a broader area and maximizing impact.

Los Angeles County Fire Department has leased two Super Scoopers from Quebec, Canada, under a 30-year agreement. However, only one is currently operational after a collision with an unauthorized drone temporarily grounded the other. The incident, described as causing a "fist-sized" dent in the aircraft, did not deter the pilots, who landed safely. Repairs are underway, and additional Super Scoopers are expected to join the fleet soon, according to SOPFEU, the Canadian nonprofit collaborating with Quebec to provide these aircraft.
