Paris – Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address at the AI Action Summit in Paris, emphasized the need to democratize technology, invest in workforce re-skilling, and combat threats posed by deepfake technology. The event, co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron, brought together global leaders, industry experts, and policymakers to discuss the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI).

Addressing AI's Impact on Employment

Acknowledging concerns over AI-driven job displacement, PM Modi reassured that while technology disrupts traditional roles, it also creates new opportunities.

"Loss of jobs is AI's most feared disruption, but history has shown that work does not disappear due to technology—only its nature changes. We need to invest in skilling and re-skilling our people for an AI-driven future," he stated.

Call for Ethical and Inclusive AI Development

PM Modi underscored the importance of open-source AI systems to ensure transparency and trust. He urged nations to collaborate on establishing global standards that uphold shared values and minimize risks associated with cybersecurity, misinformation, and deepfakes.

"We must build quality data centers free from biases, develop AI solutions rooted in local ecosystems, and ensure responsible governance to maximize AI’s benefits while mitigating risks," he said.

AI’s Role in Global Development

Highlighting AI's transformative potential, Modi stressed its applications in sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture, particularly in the Global South, where technological capabilities often lag.

"AI can improve millions of lives and accelerate progress towards sustainable development goals. To achieve this, we must pool resources and talent at a global level," he added.

Global Cooperation in AI Governance

Recognizing AI’s rapid evolution and cross-border impact, Modi advocated for international cooperation in establishing governance frameworks that address AI-related challenges while fostering innovation.

"AI is developing at an unprecedented pace, and its adaptation is even faster. There is a deep interdependence across nations. Therefore, we must work collectively to build trust and ensure AI serves humanity positively," he asserted.

The summit in Paris marks another step in India's growing role in shaping global AI policies, as the country continues to position itself as a key player in the AI revolution.
