New Delhi: Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has found himself at the center of controversy after he was seen taking an energy drink during India's Champions Trophy semi-final match against Australia in Dubai on Tuesday. The incident, which occurred during the holy month of Ramzan, sparked criticism from All India Muslim Jamaat President Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, who called Shami “a criminal” for not observing 'Roza' (fast).

However, Congress leader Shama Mohamed came to the cricketer’s defense, emphasizing that Islam allows flexibility for those traveling or engaged in physically demanding activities.

"In Islam, when we are traveling, we are not required to fast. Mohammed Shami is traveling and playing a high-intensity sport where hydration is essential. It is your deeds that matter the most. Islam is a very scientific religion," she told ANI.

Cleric Calls Shami "A Criminal" for Not Fasting

Maulana Bareilvi strongly condemned Shami’s decision, asserting that fasting is a compulsory religious duty and labeling the cricketer as a violator of Sharia law.

"By not keeping 'Roza,' Mohammed Shami has committed a crime. In the eyes of Shariat, he is a criminal and will have to answer to God," he stated.

He further argued that Shami, being physically fit and playing a match, had no valid reason to skip fasting.

"If a person is playing, it means they are healthy. A famous cricketer like Mohammed Shami drinking water during a match sends the wrong message to the public," Maulana Bareilvi added.

Divided Reactions on Social Media

The controversy has triggered mixed reactions on social media, with many users supporting Shami's personal choice, while others echoed religious concerns. Some sports analysts pointed out that many athletes adjust fasting schedules to accommodate their performance needs during major tournaments.

Shami, a key player in India’s pace attack, has not yet responded to the controversy. He continues to focus on India’s Champions Trophy campaign, with the team preparing for the final showdown in Dubai.
