Xi Urges AI Cooperation, Rejects ‘Cold War Mentality’ at SCO Summit
Tianjin – Chinese President Xi Jinping called on Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) members to boost cooperation in artificial intelligence while opposing what he termed a “Cold War mentality.”
Speaking at the largest-ever SCO summit, Xi addressed more than 20 foreign leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said China has invested $84 billion in SCO countries and pledged support for 10,000 students under Beijing’s “Luban” vocational training program.
Xi described the gathering as a chance to chart “a new phase of high-quality development and cooperation.” His remarks come amid global tensions over trade, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and Middle East conflicts.
The summit also featured a brief meeting between Xi, Modi, and Putin, reflecting China’s efforts to position itself as a peacemaker and expand its regional influence. Over the weekend, Xi met with leaders from Turkey, Cambodia, and India, with New Delhi stressing the need for “mutual respect, interest, and sensitivity” in bilateral ties.
Analysts say China’s outreach could strengthen its geopolitical standing, particularly if closer ties with India pave the way for broader cooperation across Asia. The SCO summit is expected to release a joint statement later today, with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi scheduled to address the press.
