Trump to Extend TikTok Ban Deadline by 90 Days, White House Confirms
San Francisco – President Donald Trump will sign a new executive order this week to extend the deadline for a TikTok sale or ban, granting the app a 90-day reprieve, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on Tuesday.
Originally set to be banned in the U.S. after its Chinese parent company ByteDance failed to secure a sale, TikTok will now remain operational for at least three more months.
“This extension will ensure the deal is closed so Americans can use TikTok knowing their data is secure,” Leavitt said.
Trump previously attempted to force a sale of TikTok in 2020, and again this year, citing national security concerns. Congress passed a sale-or-ban law in 2024, which the Supreme Court upheld in January. The app briefly went offline during inauguration weekend before Trump reactivated it.
Despite legal pressure, Trump has shown support for the platform in recent months.
“I have a warm spot for TikTok. I won youth by 34 points,” he said, referencing his 2024 election campaign.
Potential U.S. buyers include Oracle, Frank McCourt, Kevin O’Leary, Alexis Ohanian, and even YouTuber MrBeast, who has expressed interest in leading a separate investor group.
Analysts now doubt the ban will take effect.
“There’s nothing ‘looming’ about a ban anymore,” said Forrester analyst Kelsey Chickering.
TikTok, which boasts 170 million U.S. users, and ByteDance have yet to comment.
