Trump Imposes Tariffs on India; New Delhi Holds Ground

Table of Contents

U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed 25% tariffs on Indian imports, raising tensions between the two countries. India, however, has not rushed into a deal, choosing instead to protect key sectors like agriculture and small enterprises.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal stated that India will not compromise on national interests and will continue to support local farmers and small businesses.

India recently signed a trade agreement with the U.K. and is negotiating with the EU and other partners. This diversified approach strengthens India’s position at the global table.

While Trump focuses on countering China and reshaping global supply chains, analysts say India remains an important partner for the U.S. in the Indo-Pacific region.

India’s involvement in BRICS adds another layer of complexity. Despite warnings of more tariffs, India maintains its independent stance and is hopeful of securing a balanced trade deal by the end of 2025.
