Trump Signs Sweeping Tax and Spending Bill into Law Before July 4

Washington, D.C., July 4, 2025 — President Donald Trump has signed his administration’s signature legislative package, the One Big Beautiful Bill, into law during a celebratory White House ceremony ahead of Independence Day.

Passed narrowly in the House by 218 to 214, the 870-page bill enacts some of Trump’s core policy promises:

• Extension of 2017 tax cuts

• $150 billion boost to defense

• $100 billion to ICE for immigration enforcement

• New tax exemptions on tips, overtime, and Social Security

• Deep cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs

• Rollback of Biden-era clean energy tax credits

Vice President JD Vance cast a tie-breaking vote in the Senate, and only two House Republicans opposed the bill alongside all Democrats.

During the signing, Trump declared the bill a “birthday gift to America,” touting its tax breaks and defense funding as pro-growth.

“The largest spending cut, and yet, you won’t even notice it,” he said.

A military flyover of B-2 bombers and F-35s, recently involved in strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, punctuated the occasion.

However, critics warn of deep consequences.
Democrats and several Republicans voiced concern over rising national debt, the impact on low-income Americans, and benefits skewed toward the wealthy.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill could produce a short-term surplus but significantly raise the deficit long-term. Nearly 12 million people may lose Medicaid coverage in the coming decade, while SNAP recipients face reduced food aid.

Despite polling showing only 29% public approval, Trump praised the legislation as historic and vital for American strength and security.

The White House hopes the economic effects, especially through tax cuts and deregulation, will boost voter support as Trump seeks re-election.
