Trump Targets Greenland Again as Iran War Deepens NATO Rift
U.S. President Donald Trump renewed criticism of NATO and made fresh remarks about Greenland, as tensions with allies deepened following the Iran conflict.
In a social media post, Trump said NATO had failed to support the United States during the recent war and questioned the alliance’s reliability. He also referred to Greenland as a “poorly run” territory, repeating his long-standing interest in acquiring it.
The comments came shortly after Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran following more than a month of conflict.
Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO members for not joining U.S. military efforts against Iran. Several European countries declined to provide airspace access or naval support during the conflict, adding to tensions within the alliance.
Speaking earlier this week, Trump said disagreements with Denmark over Greenland had contributed to broader tensions. Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has been a subject of strategic interest for the United States.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte acknowledged the growing friction, stating that Trump was “clearly disappointed” with several member countries.
Analysts warned that continued criticism of NATO could weaken the alliance. Some experts said the Iran conflict has exposed divisions among members, particularly over military involvement and energy security issues.
The situation has also been complicated by ongoing developments in the Middle East, including disputes over ceasefire terms and continued military activity in the region.
