Trump Extends China Tariff Deadline by 90 Days

Table of Contents

Washington – US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order delaying the return of high tariffs on Chinese goods for another 90 days, a White House official confirmed.

The tariffs, which were set to resume on Tuesday, will now remain paused until mid-November. The move follows trade talks between US and Chinese negotiators in Stockholm in late July, where both sides signaled progress.

Without the extension, US duties on Chinese imports would have returned to their April peak of 145%, with China reinstating 125% tariffs on US goods. That tariff war was paused in May, when the US reduced its duties to 30% and China lowered its levies to 10%.

Monday’s decision continues a pattern of shifting US trade policy, with Trump repeatedly announcing, adjusting, or pausing tariffs with little advance notice.

On Sunday, Trump urged China to “quickly quadruple” its purchases of US soybeans, calling it a way to help cut China’s trade deficit with the US. Chicago soybean prices rose Monday, though it remains unclear if China has committed to increased orders.
