RFK Jr.’s Vaccine Panel Endorses Merck RSV Shot for Infants

Table of Contents

A newly restructured CDC vaccine advisory panel, under the direction of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has recommended Merck’s RSV shot, Enflonsia, for use in infants during their first respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) also unanimously approved adding the shot to the federal Vaccines for Children program, making it free for eligible families.

The vote offers reassurance to public health officials and drugmakers after RFK Jr. overhauled the panel earlier this month, raising concerns by appointing known vaccine skeptics. Despite opposition from two members, most panelists cited the shot’s strong safety and efficacy data, including a 90% reduction in RSV-related hospitalizations in clinical trials.

Enflonsia now heads into market competition with Sanofi and AstraZeneca’s rival RSV treatment, Beyfortus. Both are monoclonal antibody injections that offer seasonal protection against the virus.

The shot is approved for infants under 8 months and will be available ahead of the upcoming RSV season.
