Philippines Boosts Energy Security with Camago-3 Gas Discovery

Table of Contents

The Philippines has secured a major energy breakthrough following the successful drilling and testing of the Camago-3 well in the Malampaya gas field, a development expected to strengthen domestic supply and reduce reliance on imported fuel.

Announced by Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the discovery—alongside the earlier Malampaya East-1 (MAE-1) find—is projected to extend the operational life of the Malampaya gas field by approximately six years, offering critical support during the country’s energy transition.

Initial tests indicate that the Camago-3 well can produce up to 60 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, significantly boosting available reserves. The well is also estimated to contain around 2.5 times more recoverable gas than MAE-1, reinforcing its strategic importance to the country’s energy landscape.

The Malampaya field has long been a cornerstone of the Philippines’ power supply, particularly for Luzon, providing a cleaner alternative to coal and imported fuels. The new discovery is expected to stabilize electricity generation and help moderate energy costs for consumers.

Officials highlighted that electricity generated from Malampaya gas remains significantly cheaper than imported liquefied natural gas, making it a key asset amid global market volatility driven by geopolitical tensions.

The government is now accelerating infrastructure development, including subsea pipelines, to bring additional gas supply online by 2026. This effort aims to ensure consistent delivery to power plants and industries while supporting long-term energy planning.

The Camago-3 milestone provides the Philippines with a crucial buffer as it expands renewable energy capacity and invests in alternative technologies. It also underscores the growing role of domestic resources in enhancing energy security and economic resilience.
