Marcos Signals Possible Revival of Philippines–China Oil Talks Amid Middle East Conflict

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has indicated that escalating tensions in the Middle East could prompt Manila and Beijing to revisit stalled discussions on joint oil and gas exploration in the South China Sea, despite long-standing territorial disputes.

Speaking in an interview, Marcos acknowledged that sovereignty concerns have historically hindered progress between the two nations. However, shifting global dynamics—particularly instability linked to the Middle East—may now create urgency for renewed cooperation.

“We’ve been talking about it for a great deal, but the territorial disputes will get in the way,” Marcos said, adding that recent geopolitical developments could serve as a catalyst for both sides to seek common ground.

The remarks come as global energy markets face heightened uncertainty, with ongoing conflicts threatening supply stability. Marcos suggested that countries may need to reassess their economic strategies and alliances in response to these disruptions.

“It’s certainly going to happen… there’s going to be a very, very serious restructuring,” he noted, pointing to the possibility of nations recalibrating international relationships to secure energy needs.

Despite the potential shift, Marcos reaffirmed that the Philippines’ foreign policy remains firmly anchored in peace and national interest. “Our foreign policy is very simple: peace in the national interest. That’s it,” he said, emphasizing that war does not align with the country’s priorities.

The statement signals a nuanced change in tone from previous positions. In 2022, the Philippines halted joint exploration talks with China due to constitutional and sovereignty concerns. However, officials have since clarified that future negotiations remain possible, provided any agreement adheres to legal frameworks and protects national interests.
