Olympian Manu Bhaker's maternal grandmother and uncle tragically lost their lives in a road accident in Haryana's Bhiwani district on Sunday. The accident took place on the Mahendragarh bypass road near the Charkhi Dadri area when a car collided with their scooter.

The victims were identified as Savitri Devi, Bhaker's 70-year-old maternal grandmother, and her 50-year-old maternal uncle Yudhveer, a Haryana Roadways driver. Both died on the spot. The car driver fled the scene following the incident. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Suresh Kumar confirmed that police are actively searching for the driver, and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

This tragic news comes just days after Manu Bhaker was honored with the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. She received the award at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday, where she also shared her disappointment about the peeling of the top layer of her medals.

Bhaker's Remarkable Olympic Journey

Manu Bhaker made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics by becoming the first athlete in independent India to win two medals in a single edition of the Games. She clinched a bronze medal in the women’s individual 10m air pistol event, making her the first-ever female shooter from India to win an Olympic medal. She followed that up by securing another bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team event with Sarabjot Singh, marking India’s first-ever Olympic shooting team medal.

Though she narrowly missed out on the opportunity to achieve a historic grand treble, finishing fourth in the women’s 25m pistol event, Bhaker's Olympic performance cemented her status as one of India's most celebrated shooters.
