Jeep Unveils Wrangler-Inspired Recon EV, Starting at $65,000
Jeep has officially revealed the 2026 Recon, an all-electric SUV priced from $65,000, marking the brand’s biggest step yet into battery-powered off-road vehicles.
The Recon, shown ahead of the Los Angeles Auto Show, draws heavily from the design of the iconic Wrangler with its boxy shape, removable doors, open-air roof, and rear-mounted spare tire. Jeep first teased the idea of a Wrangler-inspired EV in 2021. Production is set to begin early next year at a plant in Mexico.
Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf said the Recon proves electric power can enhance off-road abilities, offering “instant torque, precision control and a quieter, more connected driving experience.”
The new model is a key part of Jeep’s turnaround strategy, which includes launching four new or refreshed vehicles in four months. The Recon follows the new Jeep Cherokee hybrid and redesigned Grand Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer.
Powered by dual electric motors, the Recon delivers 650 horsepower and 620 lb-ft of torque, putting it in the range of some V-6 and V-8 sports cars. Range, however, tops out at 250 miles, lower than many lower-priced EVs on the market.
The Recon’s starting price is about $14,000 more than the 2025 Wrangler plug-in hybrid and almost $27,000 more than the base 2026 Wrangler four-door. It aligns closely with the $65,200 Wagoneer S EV, which offers up to 294 miles of range.
The launch comes as parent company Stellantis scales back EV investment due to shifting demand and the loss of U.S. federal tax incentives of up to $7,500. Broderdorf acknowledged sales may be affected but said Jeep is focused on attracting the right EV buyers rather than pushing volume.
The Recon will be built at Stellantis’ Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico, alongside the Wagoneer S, Jeep Compass, and the new Cherokee hybrid. Jeep’s U.S. sales have fallen sharply from their 2018 peak of 973,000 vehicles, though this year’s sales are slightly ahead of last year.
