G7 Leaders Condemn Iran, Call for Middle East De-escalation
The Group of Seven (G7) leaders issued a joint statement Tuesday affirming their support for Israel and calling for urgent de-escalation of rising tensions in the Middle East. The statement came during the ongoing G7 Leaders’ Summit held in Kananaskis, Alberta.
“We affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself,” the G7 leaders said. “We reiterate our support for the security of Israel.”
In a unified message, the leaders condemned Iran as the “principal source of regional instability and terror,” reiterating that Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon.
The G7 bloc, consisting of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, also called for a broader de-escalation of hostilities, including a ceasefire in Gaza.
Extended Global Involvement
This year’s summit included representatives from the European Union, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Ukraine, and South Korea, reflecting the global concern surrounding the current Middle East conflict.
Photos from the summit show leaders including President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Mark Carney, Prime Minister Kier Starmer, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in high-level discussions.
Economic Concerns Also Loom
While geopolitical tensions dominated Tuesday’s headlines, the summit also addressed U.S. tariff policies, which have drawn criticism for potentially slowing global economic growth. Another key topic was support for Ukraine and future sanctions against Russia, with President Trump remaining undecided on additional measures.
The G7’s joint statement underlines growing Western alignment on the need to contain Iran’s regional activities while also preventing a broader regional conflict.
