Manila — Air travel in the Philippines was severely disrupted on Friday as Tropical Cyclone Opong, locally known as Bualoi, battered parts of the country. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines confirmed that at least 134 flights, mostly domestic, were cancelled due to the storm’s impact.

Low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific added to the disruption by announcing 46 more cancellations, leaving thousands of passengers stranded at airports nationwide. In response, the Department of Transportation ordered airlines to waive rebooking fees and provide full refunds to affected travelers.

To ease the burden on stranded passengers, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) set up temporary sleeping quarters at Terminal 3 of Ninoy Aquino International Airport. The Passenger Lodging Facility, located on the second level and extended near Gate 116, includes beds, toilets and baths, charging stations, basic storage, dining space, and water stations.

Airport officials assured passengers that food and drinks will be provided during the disruption. Authorities also emphasized that terminals will remain open as safe shelters for travelers unable to leave due to the cyclone.

Transportation officials urged airlines to inform passengers promptly about cancellations to prevent confusion and overcrowding at terminals. In past weather-related disruptions, many travelers had been forced to sleep on floors or makeshift bedding. This time, the newly prepared facilities are intended to prevent such scenes.

Cyclone Opong, which has already caused fatalities and property damage in eastern provinces, continues to bring heavy rains and strong winds as it moves across the country. Authorities have advised caution as weather conditions remain unpredictable.
